Description
The EU AI Act is shifting from a mostly theoretical compliance framework into an actively enforced regime, though regulators have shown willingness to stagger deadlines for specific system categories rather than force a single rigid cutover.
Key Deadline: August 2, 2026
The remainder of the EU AI Act starts to apply on August 2, 2026 (except Article 6(1)), and covers all high-risk AI systems already in operation before that date.
Business Requirements
Providers of high-risk AI systems must complete conformity assessments, finalize technical documentation, affix CE marking, and complete EU database registration by the deadline, per the requirements of Article 16.
Extended Timeline for Some Systems
On May 7, 2026, EU legislative bodies reached a political agreement introducing two new milestones for a subset of systems: December 2, 2027 for standalone high-risk AI systems under Annex III, and August 2, 2028 for AI systems embedded as safety components in products covered by sectoral EU safety legislation under Annex I.
National Sandboxes
Each EU member state is required to establish at least one national AI regulatory sandbox by August 2, 2026.
