Genuine solid-state batteries remain economically uncompetitive at scale, but the gap between lab announcements and real commercial deployment has narrowed meaningfully, with China setting the pace on manufacturing scale-up.

First Commercial Deployment

Verge Motorcycles became the first production vehicle to feature solid-state battery technology, using Donut Lab's all-solid-state cells on the road starting Q1 2026 — charging in under 10 minutes for up to 60 km of range per minute of charging.

China's Aggressive Push

China's solid-state battery standard launched in July 2026, alongside multiple manufacturers beginning pilot production. Greater Bay (backed by GAC) rolled out all-solid-state A-sample cells reaching a single-cell energy density of 260–500 Wh/kg — well above traditional liquid lithium-ion — targeting gigawatt-hour-level mass production within the year.

Industry Reality Check

Broader industry consensus remains cautious: true all-solid-state batteries face a 3x–5x production cost premium and remain confined to pilot-scale testing, while semi-solid-state (solid-liquid hybrid) batteries are considered the only technology realistically scalable for vehicles in 2026. High-volume, cost-competitive all-solid-state production is more realistically expected in the early 2030s.
